Whats the deal with posing?

Our take on the dreaded formal photos

Happy Thursday everyone! I am so excited to share some information on how Handlebar Studios deals with formal bride and groom portraits as well as posing. So, Whats the deal with posing? Many brides and grooms get a little bit freaked out when they think of taking all those wedding portraits. Most of them want to know how we handle posing because their only experience was prom night and face it, no one wants prom like wedding photographs.

Its no secret and I make sure to tell all my couples when we first meet that I DO NOT POSE. What do I mean by that? It’s simple really. I do one or two posed shots because that is what mom wants hanging on her wall and then once I have that done, I do what I call “Photo Direction”. Photo Direction is simple, I give you something to do or act out and you just follow the directions.

For example, If I tell the groom to whisper something in the brides ear that will make her laugh, then he can go ahead and do that. I like to capture the moment that you both start laughing at your inside joke. Its real and not posed at all. I love that! Now, if something looks a little off, I will let you know. Often you will hear me tell the guys to put their stray hand in their pocket or to grab their bride and pull her close like he’ll never let go! All these directions are getting you good images but in the end, won’t look fake. Don’t get me wrong… I do have a few posed shots that I do (like I said above – for mom) but we moved on from the prom pose and into real life. Don’t you want your photos to look like you?? I know I would!
